Abstract:

It is a global challenge to ensure equitable access to mathematics education in the 21st century. This challenge has diverse, but interconnected, implications across different national contexts. This presentation explores the contexts of South Africa and New Zealand and their associated  challenges to the provision of ‘mathematics for all’, despite being framed by economically and socio-politically contrasting contexts.

Pamela Vale is a lecturer of primary mathematics education at Te Kura Toi Tangata, School of Education at the University of Waikato. She also holds the position of Chair of the Division of Education Research Ethics Committee and an associate editor for the African Journal of Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education. She is passionate about pre-service teacher education, and the continuing post-graduate education of teachers pursuing excellence in their mathematics teaching practice. With more than a decade of experience in primary teacher education in South Africa, and research expertise drawn from her engagement in the research and development work of the South African Numeracy Chair Project, she is now invested in applying that passion to make a contribution to this field in Aotearoa New Zealand.
