The research aim at investigating the relationship linking morphology and mechanical properties to metabolism and fitness in certain bacterial strain of particular interest for their role in spreading nosocomial infetions, such e.g. Acinetobacter Baumannii.
To this purpose the research relies on a suite of different experimental techniques (AFM-based quantitative nanomechanical mapping, SEM, µRaman) to investigate the impact of different stress, such dehydration, on the shape and conditions of the outer cell membranes. The bacterial physical properties are then correlated to their fitness, as obtained by e.g. their clonogenic capability.
